HMS Tamar

This feature print shows the HMS Tamar, a troopship for the Royal Navy. She was launched in June 1863, and took her maiden voyage on 12 January 1864 to the Cape and China. Having formed part of the Naval Brigade that helped defeat the Ashanti in West Africa, the HSM Tamar was later hulked as a base ship. Arriving in Hong Kong on April 11th 1897 and was anchored off the British naval dockyard serving as a naval store ship. She was later sunk by the Royal Artillery on December 12th 1941 during the battle of Hong Kong to avoid being used by the invading Japanese forces.

The vessel anchored next to the HMS Tamar is believed to be one of the Royal Navy Duncan class battleships deployed with the Royal Navy China Squadron around 1902.

Across Victoria Harbour is the Tsim Sha Tsui peninsula and the mountains of Kowloon in the background.

The video below zooms into these naval vessels and parts of this feature print from the Hong Kong Panorama showing the vast amount of detail which can’t be seen on the preview picture.
